First of all, this blog thing is not really ideal. The internet here is crazy slow and blogspot takes a while to load, but since I'm in, here's the latest. I'm leaving today for a permaculture training in Mulanje (more South). Apparently it's a potential spot for a future eco tourism deal. It should be gorgeous. I won't be hiking Mt Mulanje this week, but I will at some point this summer.
I'm really excited about an interview next week with a Malawian who is an expert in indigenous knowledge. Logistics and planning are quite a bit different here. In the past, Malawian knowledge and local foods have been stigmatized and in their place there has been monocropping, while many local plants are cut, cleared, and the soil swept. The diet is heavy on corn, but there's a lot of untapped potential. However, stigma and habits are hard to change. Probably I'll update this entry, but I'm off to the training so I really have to go. Have a great week. By the way, I'm happy I will not be here for termite season. I'm not in the mood to try them, but I hear they're good. Maybe another time.

Hi Janae! Glad you made it there safely! Johnny has been following your updates and I promissed that I would figure out this whole blogging thing and say hi for everyone here at wh:) Gordana
Termites. I have tried them, and think they're over-rated. They don't really taste bad, but there's a texture thing going on (like eating a crispy bug, oddly enough), that I was not fond of. You should try them, though, just to have done it. You like new foods, right?
Love the blog, however infrequent it may need to be.
Hey, the blog thing is great for us to read, so for us it is ideal.
We were glad to hear you've made it; Tyler has been talking about going to Africa to see his Aunt Nae. We will email you soon with more updates.
Sounds like you are getting in the thick of it already, too. Good luck, and have fun hiking to the top of Mt. Mulanje...later this summer.
